Online retailers in the UK are beginning to receive pre-orders on the upcoming Coffee Shop CPU at Intel, specifically the 'S' socket for desktop computers. As previously reported, the new processor will have more core than its predecessor, but if the published pre-order price is correct (and does not increase due to their pre-order nature) then the new Intel chip will also have a higher MSRP than the product the existing company
Lambda-Tek, a British retailer, is currently doing pre-orders on six Coffee Shop CPUs that are expected to enter the market in the coming weeks. The CPU in question is Core i7-8700K, Core i7-8700, Core i5-8600K, Core i5-8400, Core i3-8350K, and Core i3-8100. Each segment will get an upgrade from the previous generation in the core count: the Core i7 part will run in 6C / 12T configuration, the Core i5 will be 6C / 6T, and the Core i3 will be 4C / 4T (similar to the old Core i5). The flip side of this is that, if the data from the retailer is correct, each pile element will cost slightly higher than its predecessor.
For example, the store cost almost £ 354 for the Core i7-8700K, converted to USD (and without tax) equal to about $ 400. If the price published by a UK retailer is correct, Intel is likely to quote an increase in MSRPs. This is not the first time Intel has raised its main share price: For example, Intel raised its Core i7-4770K price to $ 339, up from $ 313 for Core i7-3770K in 2013. The company did the same for Core i5-4670K: it costs $ 242 , up from $ 212 for the Core i5-3570K.
Increases and decreases of mainstream CPU MSRPs are not extraordinary events. Companies have different costs for different parts (because of different die sizes, yields, and other factors) and in a bid to maintain profit margins, they fluctuate prices. Since Coffee Lake chips are bigger than their predecessors because of the higher core count, it is logical for Intel to rise their MSRPs. However, the competitive landscape on today’s CPU market is different than it was from 2011 to 2016 as Intel could have to target AMD’s Ryzen in performance per dollar.
