If you have a Pixel or Nexus device, Project Fi is a great alternative to mobile services beyond the four major US carriers. Project Fi is a Google-managed MVNO, providing services primarily through T-Mobile and Sprint networks. One of the biggest mysteries in Fi is which networks connect with you at any given time, but there is a simple solution.
Whether you are already in Project Fi or considering switching, one mandatory app to join this service is a Spy Signal. This is a great app without even Fi, which lets users decide which band and LTE tower are currently connected, in addition to monitoring signal strength. When combined with Project Fi, the application becomes very powerful.
Track Your Network History with Spy Signal
First, if you do not already have one, grab Signal Spy here. The main purpose of Spy Signals is to track the history of your Fi network and allow style switching to T-Mobile, Sprint, or US Mobile whenever you want. Typically, style switches are not required, since Fi is responsible for connecting to the best service, but this is the right choice for troubleshooting connections.
The process of tracking your network history is easy. Inside the app you'll find a beautiful Material Design interface with the "Network History" option stored in the slide-out menu to the left. From this hub, you can see when your device is connected to T-Mobile or Sprint, which bands are connected, and signal strength.
Using Spy Spy to Switch Between Networks
The style switch option is where Spy Signals really shine and provide great value for Fi users, but the process can be a bit confusing. Google and Project Fi officially provide Dialer Code to allow users to activate the network switch whenever they choose. The caller's code is exactly what it sounds, the code entered into the caller's app to accomplish a particular purpose.
The Signal Spy Developer has collected the appropriate Dialer Code in the app and automated its deployment process. When you down the notification shade, you will see continuous notifications from Signal Spy. This notification gives the option to force the switch to T-Mobile, Sprint, or even US Cellular.
The method of applying the switch depends on the version of the Signal Spy you are using.
Enable Network Switching (Free Version)
Tap the desired network in the notification shade. Code Dialer will be copied to your clipboard. You may be given a popup that explains the keycode function, accept this and tap again on the desired network. Open the caller app on your phone, then paste the code by pressing the old number field blank and select "Paste." This will start the switching process automatically.
Bisnis Switching Jaringan (Versi Pro)
Other Fiber Calling Code
There are some other Fi dialer codes that perform functions outside of simple network switches. Signal Spy also supports this code. Additional code can be found on the Application home screen, under the heading "Dialer Launch Code".
Perhaps the most useful alternative code is Info, used to get detailed network information (for troubleshooting) and Repair, to fix connection problems. In addition, in the app settings, you can customize the dialer code that appears in the notification shade, as well as the order.
If you choose to purchase the Pro version, some other useful features are included. With your purchase, you gain the ability to track data usage, view detailed history for each connected network, set data usage limits, and dark modes that look slick (pictured above)!
For more advanced users, rooted devices get access to direct network switching in Pro mode. This means you no longer see caller apps appear while forcing network switches, a major drawback of the previously detailed Accessibility approach.
Overall, Signal Spy is a very good app with a great support team. This one is worth a look if you use Fi every day.
