In most situations, I will be rejected by the terrible robot voice that mocked me from within my phone. One exception is if the sound belongs to GLaDOS, clever computers, soap operas and funny fun that provides background commentary for Portals and Portals 2, a hit puzzle game that has been my instant favorite ever since I picked it up.
Now, GLaDOS is back - and on the iPhone, in a new title that combines the stories and visuals of the Portal franchise with the physics and gameplay of the popular Bridge Constructor game. Bridge Constructor Portal was launched tomorrow on iOS, and we have been testing it to see if it matches its name.
If you have played other Header Games titles in the Bridge Constructor series (or World of Goo for that matter) the Bridge Constructor Portal concept will soon be recognized. The goal of the game is to complete a set of 60 test chambers in this case - by building platforms and frameworks to successfully transport vehicles to the exit in the massive Aperture Science facility.
For players new to this concept, Bridge Constructor Portal does a great job of guiding you through the basics until you're on the road.
Your guide is none other than Ellen McLain, GLaDOS voice in Portal and its sequel, available on Steam. The author of this game perfectly captures the intelligence and tone of GLaDOS, and McLain perfectly recreates the original recording, to the rhythm of the robot and the personality habits that make GLaDOS instantly recognizable.
You'll find attention to detail throughout the game, and veteran players will appreciate many Easter egg references to past Portal games that are watered throughout.
Headup Games collaborate directly with Valve to make sure everything is right, and it shows. Bridge Constructor Portal is a legally licensed Portal family member, with dialogs, sound effects, and test chambers being developed in collaboration with the original Portal team. While the game graphics closely resemble Shelter Fallout nuances for iOS, Portal's visual style is clear
All familiar gameplay elements of desktop gaming have been running towards iOS - cubes, guard towers, propulsion gels, air faith plates - the list goes on. Those who have played Portal before will get the extra enjoyment of looking back at these items, but it is not important to play the previous games in this series.
With how much is loved and greatly appreciated, the Portal series is, the players will have a good hope to follow up. Fortunately, Game Headup has done a star job to capture the fierce portal charm and bring it to the phone and tablet for the first time. Gameplay is fun and wide enough to make a simple price tag feel like stealing.
Bridge Constructor Portal is available starting December 20 on iOS and Android for $ 4.99 and on macos, Windows, and Linux for $ 9.99. Versions for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One will be available in early 2018.
