Corsair may today be one of the largest companies in the PC market, offering hundreds of products, but that doesn't always happen. The company began as a manufacturer of computer products related to memory and took years to consider diversifying into other market segments. Their first significant diversification of products related to RAM was towards the power supply unit (PSU) market, with the company initially only releasing several PSUs. The move was a big success for the company and the beginning of Corsair's expansion into various PC market segments.
Although the company currently produces hundreds of products, they still put a great deal of attention on their power supply products, with Corsair not only having one of the largest product choices but an excellent reputation in the field as well. The company currently markets dozens of PSUs through nine different product series. In today's review, we tested their most popular unit series, RMX.
Corsair originally released the RM series a few years ago, with products designed to be reliable, quiet, and to offer good overall performance, but still affordable. Recently, the company added several new features that divided the two series into two, giving birth to the RMi and RMx series. With the first, Corsair added monitoring and control of software to the RM series, a feature previously only provided for premium units HXi and AXi, but additional features come at a higher price. On the other hand, the RMx series is true for the family's original vision, which consists of a quality modular PSU that is primarily designed to offer good overall performance and quiet operation. The unit we reviewed today is the latest revision (2018) of RM850x.
Packaging and Bundle
We received RM850x in a large cardboard box with yellow-black artwork that became the company's color theme. The front of the packaging is clean, focused on the image of the unit itself and records its output and only the most important features. Complete information about the unit and its performance can be found on the sides and back of the box. In the box we found the PSU was protected in thick foam and packed in a synthetic cloth bag.
The RM850x bundle is simple and straightforward, which is not unexpected for this class of products. We accept a typical AC power cable, four black M3.5 mounting screws, a comprehensive manual printed in 10 languages, lower case badges and several short cable connections. Corsair does not include thumbscrews, cable cords, or other accessories with this PSU.
Like the previous version, the RM850x is fully modular, which means that the 24-pin ATX cable that is always needed can be removed. Flat SATA and Molex cables, like ribbons, but larger PCIe and ATX / EPS power cables are normal round cables with black nylon layers. The designer cannot use cables like ribbons for everything because the small filter capacitors hidden inside the cable sleeving are larger. Cables are provided in nylon storage bags. There is no cable cable provided here, Corsair uses simple wire ties.
