How to fix a black screen issue caused by the McAfee app on Oreo updates on Galaxy S8 and Note 8

Now a month has passed since the Android 8.0 update was pushed out for the Galaxy S8, and just over a week for the Galaxy Note 8, things are still a bit on the chaotic side. Android 8.0 update does not work well with all apps, because developers are slow to bring compatibility, and McAfee seems to be a recurring actor.

For some users, the McAfee app comes as a pre-installed package, so they have no choice over it. This app not only seems to damage the device, but also bring up a black screen on Galaxy devices, and the app crashes when you try to delete it as well. Fortunately, there is a way to resolve this issue and get the full functionality of your device back.

How to fix a black screen issue caused by the McAfee app on Oreo updates on Galaxy S8 and Note 8

Method 1: Disable the "phone lock" option

Apparently, McAfee mobile app security features seem to be broken, accidentally causing black screen issues on your Galaxy S8 and Note 8 devices.

  1. Head to McAfee Mobile Security and log in with your credentials.
  2. Open the Lock options window on the left side of the screen.
  3. If the device status shows Locked, press the Unlock key at the bottom of the screen.

Method 2: Remove McAfee using Bixby

You may not be a fan of Samsung Bixby's personal assistant, but the seamless integration it offers makes this device worth it. One Bixby feature that is actually valuable in such circumstances is the ability to remove an app by simply requesting Bixby to do so.

  1. Press the Bixby button on the left side of the device to activate the Bixby assistant.
  2. Say the "Delete McAfee" command and wait while the app is uninstalled from the device.
The black screen issue caused by the McAfee app on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 after the Oreo update should now be completed.
